What Do I Do After Receiving A CP-14 “Balance Due” Notice From The IRS?

TL;DR: The IRS sends out a CP-14 notice because you owe money on unpaid taxes. Whether you agree or disagree with the amount or think the IRS made a mistake, it’s still best to review and respond before the deadline date so the IRS doesn’t begin the IRS Collection Process. This guide explains who qualifies, the rules that apply, and how to apply them to your situation.

The IRS sends out a CP-14 notice because you owe money on unpaid taxes. Whether you agree or disagree with the amount or think the IRS made a mistake, it’s still best to review and respond before the deadline date so the IRS doesn’t begin the IRS Collection Process.

CP-14 “Balance Due” Notice Letter

A CP-14 IRS Notice is a letter you receive from the IRS when there’s an outstanding balance due for unpaid taxes from your account. After reviewing the notice, you’ll either choose to pay the full amount or set up an Installment Agreement with tax professionals; or you’ll disagree with the amount because you’ve paid half already; sometimes there may have been a mistake from the agency’s end and you’ll need to contact an IRS representative immediately before the IRS is required to move forward with the IRS Collection Process.

The IRS Made A Mistake!

Taxpayers who received a CP-14 notice but already paid the tax they owed do not need to respond to the notice, according to the IRS. More likely than not, the IRS is already researching the matter and will provide an update to the taxpayer as soon as possible. If a taxpayer thinks the IRS made a mistake, contact an IRS representative immediately to notify them of the news.

My “Balance Due” Amount Is Correct! What Do I Do Now?

When you receive any IRS notices, make sure you review your notice carefully and take the necessary steps in order to stay compliant with the IRS. If you can afford to pay your balance amount in full, please do so and the IRS will minimize the penalties and interests.

I Need Help Paying My Balance

In cases where you need a little more time to pay your balance, you can work with a tax professional to help you set up an Installment Agreement to successfully make monthly payments until you’re able to pay off your entire balance.

If you’re going through harsh financial hardships, you may negotiate for Currently Not Collectible to receive a temporary hold or submit an Offer In Compromise to try to settle your taxes for less than what you owe. It’s always best to qualify for these major programs with the Fresh Start Program with a tax specialist so they’re able to advise you on your assets, liabilities, income, and expenses to determine whether you qualify for Offer In Compromise, Installment Agreement, or Currently Not Collectible.

What Happens If I Ignore And Don’t Respond To The CP-14 Notice?

If you and/or your tax representative choose to ignore and don’t respond to the IRS by the deadline, you’ll receive follow-up notice(s) containing similar information, and eventually, your account will be sent to the IRS Collections Department by the IRS. This is where tax issues start to appear and hopefully motivate you to start paying off the tax debt that you owe. Wage garnishments, bank levies, levies on your Social Security benefits, tax liens, etc. will be implemented if you continue to ignore and not respond to the IRS.
